Nearly four years ago I entered my university as a straight out of school 18-year-old with no real idea of the world, now nearly four years later I am soon to exit as a 21-year-old with no real idea of the world, a debt, a piece of paper and no job. Now it’s not because I have not tried (because trust me I am TRYING as we speak), but it is simply that no one wants a graduate without experience. Although I have done my time of internships and coffee runs, it feels like it isn’t enough. Each day another door closes and the time between me still being a uni student and me being a jobless adult grows closer together. It is a struggle that makes you wonder if this whole process was worth it. After all, we go to university to further an education with the expectation of it creating more opportunities then stopping them. But somehow that isn’t happening and more and more former students are becoming a statistic rather then a hopeful story.
It is becoming more evident and apparent that just because you have gotten a degree doesn’t mean you’ll get your dream job. In fact, there is more of a chance of acquiring a sales job then getting a job in what you studied. This is the sad reality that we all do eventually have to face. A reality that I am seeing before my very eyes, as it all draws in closer. This look may be grim but it is truthful. Of course there is the one-off story of someone finding a fabulous position outside of university, but how likely is that? Let’s face is this modern day myth is hard to over come.
Although this may feel grim, please understand that I sit uncertain on a future that is fast approaching. I don’t know where the breaks are, in fact I don’t even know where the last six months went, and the only thing to do is try and beat it to the punch. So I’ll keep trying and applying like we all should. Another ‘no’ means a ‘yes’ should be coming closer. And let’s face it, we all need that one chance to prove ourselves.
